patience, so much patience
2007-1-18
People around me who know my situation(s) often are astounded by the amount of patience I can have with adverse situations. "Where do you take that patience from?"
Well here are some sources I have, which are more "frame of mind" than character traits:
- I am pragmatic. "What good does it do for me to be upset with this?" The answer is usually "I will be upset, but nothing more of any use." Being pissed is of no real use in most cases.
- Do unto others... Well, I have my own issues others can very well be upset with. It is my belief that if I can be patient with things that might upset me, others can be patient with my issues too.
- One of the things that I can give to the world has always been a calm and serene approach. Oh, I can be nervous. Very muchly. But faced with the nerves of others it is often me who takes on the role of anchor, of rock in stormy sea. I could get into why I think I got to be that way, but it is a very integral part of me today. Going back to the first point (what use would upset be?), calm is my contribution to solving a problem at hand.
- Usually I don't very much care about 'blame'. "Why is it not working?" is less interesting than "What can we/I do to make it work again?" So many people I know are so blame-oriented. And naturally it is always "them"- But even if it IS "them" who are to blame? Will that solve the situation at hand? Pragmatism again I guess.
Oh, and here's another one:
- The person in front of you seldom can be blamed anyway. They usually only happen to work there and might be as unhappy about the sutuation as you are. And besides: if they CAN do something about it, do you really think shouting at them will make it more likely they will?
