how to preserve OpenSpace results
2005-2-14
Magdalena Bötcher raises an interesting question in her really late BlogWalk2 post. She asks how one cpuld preserve the results from an OpenSpace kind of collaboration.

This is a problem I will be facing very soon, as I intend to use the technique for some 'collaborative plot generation for large groups'.
- One way is the 'transcribe the outcome, loose the process' - which is actually the step that comes after the OpenSpace process. Turning something flid and collaborative into a proper document or outline. Somewhat like turning a WiKi into a book.
- I might copy the clusters of notes on the board (it was a window in the BlogWalk 2) down into a Tinderbox map. Spatial relationships is what a Tinderbox map excels in. For a poor sighted person like me that would be a hell of a task, high-res digital photos really help here. The question is: is that task worth the result? How much of the 'context' and 'un-expressed meaning' will get lost anyway over time?
I guess a combination of both will be the road to travel. Any kind of transcription must inherently also involve interpretion - that can't be avoided.
Maybe that interpretion is actually 'the next step' in the process?
Could the OpenSpace (WiKi like) collaboration be not only captured, but also done in software the picture would be different. A WiKi might be as close as we get to that.
