Who would not rather be a rising ape than a falling angel?

2008-6-27

In a very good - and also very falsely headlined* - article, Terry Pratchet ask in a side note about the different apeal of Darwin's teachings and that of religion: "Who would not rather be a rising ape than a falling angel?"

Terry impiels that *everyone* would rather be an rising ape. Hmmmmm - I wonder if that is so. Yes. in the "what we achieved" mindset the 'rising ape' has a high moral value, much like the selfmade man. But then there is the "where we came from" mindset, the one that would rather belong to a (former) noble family that to the rabble. If roots is what you value - or rather *geritage* - the fallen angel sounds kind of grander, does it not?
