overcoming reluctancy - burning desire
2005-9-22
Next stop in the "reluctant volunteer" series: Steve Pavlina has a nice article about Cultivating Burning Desire:
"[W]hen you are truly 100% committed to reaching your goals, you move from hoping to knowing. If you want something badly enough, then quitting is simply not an option. You either find a way or make one. You pay the price, whatever it takes."
He goes on to list eight steps to total commitment, which I will paraphrase here:
- burn the ships - give yourself no escape route. no easy way out.
- Fill your environment with desire boosters - affirmation, text messages to yourself around the house and office.
- Sourround yourself with positive people - Share your goals only with people who will support you, not those who will respond with cynicism or indifference.
- Feed your mind with empowering information on a daily basis - Read blogs like Steve Pavlina's or Curt Rosengren's for example.
- Replace sources of negative energy with positive energy - quit TV news, laugh more.
- Dress for success - Would you dress any differently if your goals were already achieved?
- Use mental programming - visualize your goal to energizing music.
- Take immediate action - One of the secrets to success is recognizing that motivation follows action.
Some of these might seem difficult to achieve in most situations - especially the people/environment related ones. But Things like positive visualisations can be a great help with those. Sometimes we can't seem to be able to take direct action. But having a burning desire will get our sub-consciousness into gear. It will start moving things into directions that solve many problem without the need for headstrong direct action.
So, don't let yourself get stoped by not being able or willing to achieve all those eight points. Work at those you can. The others might just follow naturally!
Ok in the context of "reluctant volunteers" this might not be so very much helpfull. Cultivating a burning desire after all is something these volunteers need to do - on their own. But maybe inspiring and cultivating a burning desire in others is worth a thought.
