the "block" thing
2005-9-25
The "reluctant volunteer" effect has a lot of similarities with the proverbial "writers block".
A blocked writer does actually want to write. But she feels unable to do so. Maybe the strategies for overcoming writers block can be applied here to?
So, what are such strategies?
- starting small, un-important. Just sitting down and writing - writing anything, aimless, without criticising, is a good way to get the juices flowing. More serious thing can evolve from there.
- thinking about writing - even while not being able to. Keep your mind on it. Plan when not writing. Dream.
- talk about it - with the right people. Community, positive, encouraging company of like-minded people can really boost motivation.
That just from the top of my head. I'd need to re-read the excelent Outwitting Writers' Block: And Other Problems of the Pen for more examples.
